This Mother’s Day, iHeart Launches A National Public Service Campaign With Every Mother Counts To Address The Maternal Health Crisis
COMPANY AWARDS SPOTLIGHT MEDIA GRANT TO HELP BRING AWARENESS TO THE RISING MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE IN THE UNITED STATES
New York – May 10, 2024 – iHeartMedia today announced Every Mother Counts as the newest recipient of its coveted Spotlight Media Grant program to bring awareness to the fact that the United States is one of the most dangerous high-resource nations in the world to give birth. In 2021 (the most recent year for which there is data), in the U.S. alone, over 1,200 women died from complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and the risk of dying is three times greater for Black women in the U.S. compared to white women.
Every Mother Counts believes that pregnancy and childbirth should be safe, respectful, and equitable for everyone, everywhere. Founded by Christy Turlington Burns in 2010 to address the global maternal health crisis, Every Mother Counts works to increase access to timely, quality maternity care and improve maternal health outcomes in the United States and around the world.
Beginning Mother’s Day weekend and running through the end of the year, 840 iHeart radio stations across the country will air a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that bring attention to the rising mortality rates among pregnant women and will direct listeners to everymothercounts.org to learn more and take action. The campaign will also include grassroots local opportunities for listeners to get involved with Every Mother Counts and other partner organizations, including Black Mamas Matter Alliance; a series of interviews with subject matter experts including Christy Turlington Burns, Founder & President, Every Mother Counts; and a digital campaign that will extend across iHeart radio station websites.
Launched in 2020, the iHeart Communities Spotlight Media Grant Program has supported with free media nearly 20 organizations that are making a positive impact within communities and serving the full diversity of the country. To date, iHeart has committed $11 million worth of media to leading organizations supporting American communities that fight against hate and racism and bring attention to issues disproportionately impacting underserved communities.
Past iHeart Spotlight Media Grant partners include UNCF; GLAAD; Operation Hope; NAACP; SAGE; OutRight Action International; Big Brothers Big Sisters; CenterLink; Stop AAPI Hate; National Urban League; Black Music Action Coalition; The National Black Justice Coalition; Shine a Light; Hispanic Promise; The Trevor Project; The Ad Council's Fight the Virus, Fight the Bias; National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ); and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
“It is unfathomable that, today, a woman might die in pregnancy or childbirth, and yet this happens far too frequently – and right here, in the United States. Every Mother Counts believes that to achieve our mission to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for everyone, everywhere, we need to begin by educating about the maternal health crisis,” said Christy Turlington Burns, founder and president of Every Mother Counts. “This is why we are delighted to partner with iHeart on this campaign. Raising awareness among the hundreds of thousands of iHeart listeners across this country is the first step toward creating meaningful change on the state of maternal health.”
“The iHeart Spotlight Media Grant program brings attention to issues that impact historically marginalized communities and helps access solutions through public awareness and action,” said Michael Preacher, President, Unified Partnerships at iHeartMedia. “The rising maternal health crisis is a critical issue that is both preventable and solvable, and this campaign will bring attention to the statistics and enable listeners to access valuable resources, potentially changing the outcome for thousands of women and babies across the U.S.”
About Every Mother Counts
Motivated by the belief that maternal health is a human right, Every Mother Counts works to advance evidence-based strategies to address the global maternal health crisis and improve maternal health outcomes and the experience of care for all. We support community-centered care and workforce development by raising awareness, investing in community-led solutions, and advocating for critical systems change. iHeartPodcasts and Kaleidoscope Partner with John Legend to Debut Riveting New Series “Afghan Star”
Hosted by John Legend, the all-new audio documentary debuts May 15 and tells the story of the show that captured a nation’s voice and launched a musical revolution in Afghanistan
Groundbreaking Original Artwork, Created by Eight Graphic Fiction Artists in Partnership with Publisher & Entertainment Studio AWA, Accompanies Each Episode, with Proceeds from Sales of the Artwork Benefiting The Noor Initiative

NEW YORK – May 8, 2024 – iHeartPodcasts, the No. 1 podcast publisher globally according to Podtrac, together with Kaleidoscope, the network behind No. 1 hits “Skyline Drive,” “The Last Soviet” and “On Musk With Walter Isaacson,” announced today “Afghan Star” -- a new original audio documentary hosted by EGOT-winning artist and activist, John Legend, about Afghanistan’s cultural revolution told through the lens of the country’s first musical talent show. Premiering May 15, the 8-part audio documentary will depict how Afghan Star inspired an Afghanistan that could be: women singing without hijabs, the country’s first rapper, people of warring ethnic groups hugging and cheering for each other on stage. It will highlight the story of how a ragtag team scrambled to make the show every week, and the dangers they faced, while trying to push their nation forward. Fans can listen to the trailer now, HERE.
“I was immediately drawn to this story, with its many heroes and heroines, moments of tragedy, triumph and suspense. “Afghan Star” is a true celebration of the power of music and showcases how, even in exile, courageous teams are working around the clock to save our music and bring a little joy back to our communities,” said John Legend.
John Legend is an EGOT-winning, critically acclaimed, multi platinum artist and producer, as well as a co-founder of Get Lifted Film Co. Legend has released nine celebrated albums over the course of his career and is currently a coach on NBC’s The Voice, the musical competition series format shared by Afghan Star. As an activist, Legend has used his voice and work to effect social impact across communities that need it most. While this isn’t a political show, the series feels especially timely. It contextualizes what is happening today, by providing a story of resistance and hope, and presenting a more optimistic view of Afghanistan and the region. Moreover, with Legend’s voice, the show highlights the enduring power of music and its ability to uplift communities across the globe.
“We are thrilled to have John Legend on board for this extraordinary series,” said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. “His voice, along with his commitment to social impact and uplifting communities through music has helped bring this show together. We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Kaleidoscope and excited to match extraordinary artists like John Legend with meaningful storytelling.”
"Working with John Legend on this show is a gift. As a coach on The Voice and a champion of voices less heard, he’s the perfect person to guide listeners through this fascinating story about how music can move mountains” said Oz Woloshyn, Kaleidoscope co-founder. "’Afghan Star’ is a perfect example of the kind of series Kaleidoscope creates. We aim to tell stories that make sense of the world around us, and bring our listeners on voyages of discovery. We’re excited to continue to partner with iHeartPodcasts to get the word out to the largest audience possible,” said Mangesh Hattikudur, Kaleidoscope co-founder.
Kaleidoscope has also partnered with New York-based graphic fiction publisher and entertainment studio AWA (Artists, Writers, & Artisans) to create unique pieces of graphic art for each of the podcast episodes, including an unforgettable image from superstar artist Rahzzah that represents the spirit of hope embodied by the show. Prints of each artwork will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting The Noor Initiative, a non-profit working to ensure every Afghan girl has access to education and opportunity.
“We are thrilled to be partners on this incredible story, and to have collaborated to bring it to life visually with some of the best graphic artists in the world, many from diverse backgrounds, and all of whom had a profound emotional response to Afghan Star,” said Matthew Anderson, AWA co-chair and President. “The impact of this story is reflected through the compelling visual art that pushes the boundaries of how art can elevate an audio project and we hope many fans will collect one or more of the art pieces as a way of celebrating the show and supporting The Noor Initiative.”
“Afghan Star” is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and will be available on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.

The play-by-play channels will enable iHeart’s listeners to hear NBCU’s coverage of the most exciting moments of the Games, with a special focus on Team USA. The U.S. has led the medal count at seven consecutive Summer Games and looks to be a powerhouse again. NBCU’s coverage on iHeart’s channels is expected to include Team USA men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, and volleyball, as well as swimming, gymnastics, track & field, and more.

Listeners can follow along to learn and celebrate the athletes, city, and culture of the Paris Olympic Games. Additionally, as part of this collaboration with NBCU, iHeartMedia will produce Olympic-themed episodes for some of its most popular educational podcasts, including Stuff You Missed in History Class and Ridiculous History.
In Paris this summer, the world’s greatest athletes will compete against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world where the modern Olympic Games were conceived 130 years ago. This will be the third time Paris has hosted the Olympics (1900 and 1924), tying London for the most as a Summer Games host. Los Angeles (1932, 1984) will tie those two cities when it hosts the first Summer Games in the U.S. in 32 years in 2028.
The organizers of Paris 2024 are reimagining the Games to make them more accessible to the public and to showcase their city to the world. In a first, competitions will be held amidst iconic Parisian landmarks – beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, equestrian at the Palace of Versailles, and urban sports at Place de la Concorde.

Nate Silver & Maria Konnikova Announce New Podcast “Risky Business” From Pushkin Industries and iHeartPodcasts
A weekly show about making good decisions — in poker, in politics, and in your everyday life — from two people who have won and lost on the biggest stages
Listen to the to the official trailer now, HERE
NEW YORK – May 1, 2024 – Maria Konnikova and Nate Silver are both journalists who moonlight as high-stakes poker players. On their new weekly podcast "Risky Business" — out May 16, 2024 from Pushkin Industries and iHeartPodcasts — they will bring their analytical framework to everything from politics to poker to everyday decisions. Put simply: "Risky Business" is a show about making good decisions. Listeners can hear the official trailer now, here, and follow the show for new episode alerts.
“When you play high-stakes poker you don’t just learn how to play cards, you learn how to think about the world,” Konnikova explains. “You learn a clear, useful framework for making all kinds of hard decisions. In 'Risky Business' we’ll help listeners understand this framework and learn to apply it to the decisions in their own lives.”
The two friends bring a wealth of experience to the podcast. Maria has a doctorate in psychology and is the author of several books including, most recently, "The Biggest Bluff." While researching the book, she inadvertently became a professional poker player with over $500,000 in tournament winnings. Nate is the founder and former editor-in-chief of political and statistical analysis site FiveThirtyEight, and one of the country’s leading election forecasters. He has over $800,000 in lifetime poker tournament winnings and his forthcoming book, "On the Edge," is about gambling and risk.
Both Nate and Maria will be competing at the World Series of Poker this year. But, "Risky Business" isn’t just about poker, of course. Nate will also bring his expertise as a statistician and forecaster to the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“We'll talk about the probabilities as well as tactics and strategy around politics and current events,” he adds. “How do things like expected value or game theory affect the decisions that impact all of our lives?”
Plus, listeners will learn how to apply the very same concepts to making good decisions in their everyday lives — from which car to buy or college to attend to what time to leave for the airport.
"Risky Business with Nate Silver & Maria Konnikova" is produced by Pushkin Industries and distributed by iHeartPodcasts. New episodes will be released each Thursday starting May 16, 2024 on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are available.
