iHeartPodcast’s “Next Question With Katie Couric” Releases Special Limited Series Delving Into the Stunning Realities Of A Country Without Roe v. Wade

Award-winning journalist Katie Couric sets out across the U.S. speaking with historians, doctors, activists, everyday women and more in the narrative series “Abortion: The Body Politic.”

WHAT: This June, the Supreme Court is expected to gut Roe v. Wade. This astonishing move follows the passing of several state laws blocking the right to abortion across the country. The historic reversal will immediately trigger restrictive abortion laws in at least 23 states. But what does that really mean for the people impacted by this stunning turn of events? Katie Couric set out to bring a voice to the voiceless in a limited narrative series from her iHeartRadio Original Podcast with Katie Couric Media, “Next Question with Katie Couric” titled “Abortion: The Body Politic.”

The guaranteed right to safe, legal abortion was established forty-nine years ago in the landmark Roe v Wade decision, which instantly changed the lives of millions of citizens. Since then, the rest of the world has seen a trend of liberalizing abortion laws over the past 25 years. Yet the United States is now on the precipice of rolling back this health right.

The six-episode special series, months in the making, became more relevant than ever when an unprecedented leak of a draft decision confirmed what many feared: Roe v. Wade is poised to be overturned by the conservative-led Supreme Court this summer. The narrative series weaves together interviews with historians, doctors, researchers, abortion activists, clinic staff, reproductive justice leaders and people who have had abortions. “Abortion: The Body Politic” was created in an effort to understand how we got here, and what a post-Roe world looks like.

To get a preview of what the limited series will cover, listen to a bonus episode of “Next Question with Katie Couric” that unpacks the bombshell leaked draft and the fallout HERE.

WHO: Katie Couric (@katiecouric) is an award-winning journalist, #1 New York Times best-selling author of her memoir, “Going There,” and a co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer and her eponymous media company, Katie Couric Media (KCM). KCM’s current projects include a daily newsletter, “Wake-Up Call”; podcast, “Next Question”; original video, including short-form digital series, as well as documentaries and scripted series. You can find it all at katiecouric.com.

Joined by guests like Gloria Steinem; Mary Ziegler, foremost abortion law expert;  Jessica Chastain, Academy Award-winning actress; Busy Philipps actress and activist; Dr. Warrer Hern abortion doctor; and more, Couric leaves no stone unturned as she unpacks the political and societal toll of a landmark case being overturned.

WHEN: The first episode of “Abortion: The Body Politic” premieres Thursday, June 9, with new episodes released weekly on Thursdays. Listen to the official trailer now, HERE.

WHERE: Listen to “Abortion: The Body Politic” through the “Next Question with Katie Couric” feed on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts.

iHeartRadio and Sound Argument LLC Announce the launch of “Class Action,” a New Documentary Series About the Next Generation of Lawyers

Listen to the “Class Action” Trailer HERE

New York – May 31, 2022 – iHeartRadio, the no. 1 podcast publisher according to Podtrac, and Sound Argument LLC announced today the launch of a new documentary podcast titled “Class Action.” Hosted by Katie Phang, a trial lawyer, Anchor, and Host for MSNBC and Peacock, the 12-part podcast series will track a diverse cast of outstanding law students who are battling it out in mock trial competitions across the country. The first two episodes will debut on June 7 and can be heard on iHeartRadio and all other major platforms. Listen to the trailer HERE.

The budding young lawyers on “Class Action” are extraordinary, bright, ambitious and sometimes ruthless. They are poised to enter a justice system that is under intense public scrutiny. And jury trials—a bedrock of a fair justice system—are becoming rare. Prosecutors aggressively push plea deals on defendants, while defense attorneys, often untrained in courtroom procedure, urge them to accept. But in the wake of high-profile verdicts like the George Floyd case, and with the growth in trial “mooting”/mock trialing at major law firms, trial advocacy training is gaining popularity. Mock trial tournaments are quickly becoming a necessary and exciting kind of collegiate sport. One tournament director, who works full time as a homicide investigator, sees it this way:

“All of a sudden we take lawyers, they graduate law school, and we expect them to walk into a courtroom and talk about life and death and millions of dollars without any practice. Think about music, playing the violin in your basement. And then, all of a sudden, walking into Carnegie Hall one day and playing for the first time. It would never happen in music. It would never happen in sports. Why should it happen in law?,” said Jared Rosenblatt, Hofstra University.

Host Katie Phang will guide us through these young lawyers’ stories, disentangling the complexities of American law along the way. Listeners will meet Andy Vizcarra, a first-generation American whose parents emigrated from Mexico to Texas and have worked tirelessly at their restaurant to put their daughter through law school; Tyler Volesky, a young Native American politician, now a law student in South Dakota; Ellie Sands and Anjani Shah—part of a team of activists from Brooklyn Law—who battle for justice not only in mock trial but in real-life legal clinics; DeAndre Bell, a self-styled “church boy” from Houston, who plans to run for President in 2040; and Lajeanne Shelton, the powerful lion of the Dillard team who bristles at comments that she’s too aggressive in court.

“Working on this podcast and meeting these trial students and coaches has re-affirmed my faith in the crucial roles that jury trials play in our lives,” said Phang. “Over the course of a year, I’ve met a group of inspired coaches who recognize the value of investing in the next generation of trial attorneys. And I am thrilled to witness students who have overcome significant obstacles to learn and honor the craft of courtroom procedure. ‘Class Action’ is a breath of fresh air in these troubled times. It’s a reminder of why I became a trial lawyer in the first place--- to defend our democratic judicial system.”

Producers Lisa Gray and Kevin Huffman spent a year recording the grueling bootcamps, scrimmages and competitions with law teams from Brooklyn Law, St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and the University of South Dakota. Listeners will hear the young lawyers reach near-exhaustion arguing cases at high-stakes tournaments. The producers also followed an undergraduate team from Dillard University in New Orleans trying to bounce back from the twin disasters of Covid-19 and Hurricane Ida to make a Cinderella run at the national championship. Lawyers, law students and any listener who loves a good story will be caught up in the drama that unfolds, armchair-quarterbacking the cases. Judging judges. Predicting decisions.

We’ll hear from St. Mary’s trial coach AJ Bellido de Luna, a former US Marine, turned cop, turned advocate. He loves his job and protects his students like the warrior he’s always been. “I put them through a boot camp in the summer,” he said. “I want them to be good workers, willing and if they have a chip on their shoulder, fine, I can deal with that. I have a chip, too.” At South Dakota University’s Knudson School of Law, its coach, Professor Laura Rose, herself the daughter of a legendary advocacy coach, who relentlessly prepares her team for the big leagues—to knock the “South Dakota Nice” out of them. And in New Orleans, beloved coach Adria Kimbrough reveals, mid-season, that she is leaving her team at the end of the year. But first she wants that national championship for her HBCU students.

“Class Action” plunges listeners into a rich verité-driven soundscape, replete with mic’d-up behind-the-scenes drama, in-depth character scenes and immersive courtroom battles. It’s a “cinematic” podcast: listeners are immersed in the action, it’s direct and emotional. The music swells, stories play out. Coaches urge players on the sidelines, as Katie and a team of noted trial attorneys—including Preet Bharara, Elie Honig, Lara Bazelon and Tony Serra— help break the code of American law.

“Class Action” is a co-production of Sound Argument LLC and iHeartMedia and is distributed by the iHeartPodcast Network. Follow us on Twitter at @ClassActionPod.

Podimo and iHeartMedia’s “Forgotten: Women of Juárez” Multi-Language Podcast Collaboration Wins First-Of-Its-Kind Award for “Best Latin American Podcast of the Year”

NEW YORK -- May 20, 2022 --True crime podcast “Forgotten: Women of Juárez,” about femicides in Juarez, Mexico, has won the "Best Latin American Podcast of the Year" Award at Estación Podcast Festival, the leading podcasting event in Spain and Latin America. The podcast, a partnership between Podimo and iHeartMedia, was translated and adapted in three languages: Spanish, German and Danish, and is the first translated podcast to win this award.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the chilling phenomenon of the dead women of Juárez came to light: young women who were abducted during their journeys from home to school or work and vice versa, who were sexually abused and whose remains appeared later, dumped in the desert with total impunity. Stunned, we witness one of the most terrifying episodes in the history of contemporary Mexico. The city of Juárez became the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman. Almost 30 years after the sinister discovery of the first mass grave in Lote Bravo, the crimes not only continue to happen, but have spread throughout the country, the entire continent.

“Forgotten: Women of Juárez” is the essential return to the origin: who and why unleashed the violence in Juárez in the mid-1990s? Why so much impunity? What responsibility does the United States have in all this? Is it a serial killer, a satanic sect or an organized group? What role have Mexican and US authorities played in the investigations? Why are these murders still unsolved? Above all: why understanding what happened in Juárez is crucial to raise awareness and put a definitive stop to violence against women? To answer these questions, this podcast brings together statements from journalists, police authorities from both sides of the border, and relatives of the victims.

“Olvidadas: las muertas de Juárez” is the Spanish adaptation of “Forgotten: Women of Juárez,” one of the most intimate and shocking true crime podcasts of 2020 of the same title, created, reported and investigated in its original version by Mónica Ortiz Uribe and Oz Woloshyn, whose investigations are voiced in Spanish by Mexico City-based investigative journalists Sandra Romandía and Rossana Fuentes Berain, respectively.
