A New Podcast From Rococo Punch and iHeartPodcasts Offers a Rare Glimpse Into the Insular World of Ballet and the Complex Relationship Dancers Have with the Art Form and Culture

Season Two of the Award-Winning Investigative Series – The Turning – Set to Launch on January 24, 2023; Listen to the official audio trailer now HERE

Much of ballet culture in America stems from the artistry and experience of world-renowned choreographer George Balanchine, who brought ballet to the next level in the United States, creating an entirely new aesthetic and understanding of movement. Despite his genius, he also controlled — and, some would argue, abused — a string of very young muses, even marrying several of them. He created a culture where a male choreographer could grow dancers into obedient “vessels” to be molded into whatever the choreographer wanted. What was the cost of bringing these ballets to life? How far does Balanchine’s shadow extend beyond himself?

Now in season two of their investigative podcast series – THE TURNING: Room of Mirrors – Rococo Punch, the independent audio production studio, and iHeartRadio, America’s #1 audio company, team up to follow the lives of former, current, and aspiring dancers as they define their complex relationship with the art form they cannot live without. While the image of ballet in modern America is one of delicacy, beauty and status, underneath this elegant veneer is a challenging culture, one that is far more extreme than outsiders might imagine and more complex than insiders may initially realize. It’s a society founded on the culture of a single male leader exerting his control over young women.

With this new season, host Erika Lantz returns to explore a more nuanced look at an insulated world through stories of the women who set the stage for what we know as ballet today. The dancers open up to her about what it means to fully dedicate oneself to an unforgiving yet intoxicating pursuit, and reveal the physical and mental demands inside ballet.  Lantz looks at cultural scripts around gender, race, genius, beauty, body image, and more. Who created the ballet body and how does it persist in modern dance today? What does it mean to perfect “The Line” in ballet? Having studied ballet for 10 years beginning at age 4, Lantz weaves in her own experience and unique perspective.

Coming off the heels of critically acclaimed podcast shows Welcome to Provincetown and Finding Raffi, Rococo Punch and iHeartPodcasts is set to launch THE TURNING: Room of Mirrors on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.  Already named one of Vulture’s “Most Anticipated Podcasts of 2023,” THE TURNING: Room of Mirrors is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and available on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.

iHeartPodcasts and School of Humans Announce “Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children”

The 8-part investigative series hosted by Journalist Josie Duffy Rice launches Jan 18, 2023

School of Humans and iHeartPodcasts today announce “Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children.” In 1968, five Black girls escaped from the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children, a so-called “reform school” outside of Montgomery, Alabama. These girls were not the first children to run away from the institution, which everyone called Mt. Meigs. Children tried to escape all the time, desperate to get away from a place described by many as a child’s prison. But this time was different. This time, a girl named Mary Stephens chose to tell someone her story. It was a decision that would change everything.

“Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children,” hosted by Josie Duffy Rice, is an investigative podcast chronicling the history of Mt. Meigs, an institution that began as a safe haven for black youth before mutating into a “modern-day slave plantation” rife with torture and abuse. It tells the story of the man who decided to blow the whistle on the corruption and brutality that flourished at Mt. Meigs, and the repercussions he suffered as a result. And it traces the histories of the now-adults who were trapped there as children in the 1960s.

The podcast traces how individuals and policies seeded in the Jim Crow era allowed places like it to exist without accountability. It explores how ideas about juvenile criminal justice became institutionalized throughout the country, in places like the Dozier School in Florida, where the remains of 55 boys were discovered in 2012.

“Unreformed” features the voices of survivors who will tell their stories for the first time. Each of them remains haunted by their experience. Among them is artist Lonnie Holley, sent to Mt. Meigs at age 11 for being out past curfew. Now 72, Holley’s art is found all over the world, from The National Gallery to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Yet he still wakes at night with terrors. So does Mary Stephens, now 67 years old.

Still, Mary and Lonnie are, in many ways, the lucky ones. This podcast tells the story of countless former students who ended up on death row or serving life sentences. In particular, it focuses on Jesse James Andrews, who was sentenced to death for the grisly murder of three people in Los Angeles.

At its inception, Mt. Meigs seemed almost too good to be true — started by the daughter of an enslaved woman, the pride of Booker T. Washington, the place where Satchel Paige learned to play baseball. But soon, its vast potential was corrupted by the virulent racism of the state of Alabama. But despite its history of torture and abuse, Mt. Meigs remains open. Understanding what happened at institutions like Mt. Meigs is a critical part of reckoning with America’s past. That past lives on in contemporary law enforcement, education policy, and disproportionate violence against Black people. Guided by Josie Duffy Rice, “Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children” tells the story of what really happened at Mt Meigs.

“Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children” is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and will debut January 18,2023. Listen to the official trailer now on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard. Click follow to be alerted when new episodes post.

Diane Guerrero Partners with Sonoro and iHeartMedia’s My Cultura Podcast Network For New Music-driven Series "Adelita: Changing The Key" Slated For Release On January 24, 2023

Executive Produced By Guerrero, Sonoro, My Cultura & Ligiah Villalobos (Writer Of La Misma Luna)

Acclaimed actress Diane Guerrero partnered with Sonoro, a global entertainment company that has quickly become the #1 podcast network in Latin America, and My Cultura, iHeartMedia’s podcast network dedicated to elevating Latinx voices and stories, to present a new music-driven franchise titled Adelita: Changing the Key slated for release on January 24, 2023. Adelita arrived hot off the heels of the colossal hit Encanto and global demand for stories centered around Latino voices. Guerrero stars in and executive produced the series, which also features actors Jesse Garcia (upcoming Flaming Hot) and Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty, Devious Maids), alongside an entire team of Latina creatives and executives, a feat rarely seen in entertainment. Adelita will be available in both English and Spanish on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.

Adelita chronicles the culturally rich coming-of-age story of an audacious Tejana singer (played and sung by Guerrero) who seeks to cross over to pop stardom in the U.S. and in doing so, leaves her Tejano music roots behind. The series depicts a deeply multidimensional story through Adelita’s journey in which she comes into her own amongst a beautiful intersection of family, community, legacy, love, betrayal, and beyond.

The project embodies the future of entertainment through a Latinx creative team, serving as a real catalyst for the change needed in entertainment. The series was created and executive produced by Ligiah Villalobos, whose feature film, La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon) became the fifth highest-grossing Mexican movie of all time. Her unparalleled talent and holistic understanding of the Latino culture preserved the authenticity of this dynamic Latino story. Furthermore, the series was developed and produced by Sonoro co-founder Camila Victoriano, the only millennial Latina founder in media today, and its leading development executive, Bettina López Mendoza. The project was also championed by iHeartMedia’s SVP of My Cultura Podcast Network, Gisselle Bances, an integral partner to Sonoro, who collectively continues to bring to life stories that center Latinx voices powerfully and authentically.

Adelita follows Sonoro’s and My Cultura’s hugely successful 2022 series, Princess of South Beach, starring Rachel Zegler, which quickly became a #1 hit show and was nominated for a prestigious Ambie Award (Best Fiction Podcast) and most recently an iHeartPodcast Award (Best Fiction Podcast). Sonoro’s unique multicultural approach and undeniable track record for hit content has positioned itself as one of today’s most exciting new entertainment companies and an undeniable force.

"I am so excited to be a part of 'Adelita: Changing the Key,' as both a performer and executive producer. It's a story with real heart and is truly a love letter to the communities that make this music so vibrant. I can't wait for audiences to listen to Adelita's story and sing along to her music." - Diane Guerrero

“Following the success of ‘Princess of South Beach,’ we’re thrilled to continue to redefine what a modern telenovela sounds like, this time with ‘Adelita: Changing the Key.’ We're so proud of the amazing team behind Adelita and are excited to be partnering again with iHeartMedia's MyCultura Podcast Network. We can't wait for listeners to hear the amazing bilingual soundtrack and performances.” - Camila Victoriano, Sonoro co-founder

”With ‘Adelita: Changing the Key,’ I set out to tell a story about a young woman who empowers herself to go beyond the expectations and limitations that others placed on her, and in doing so, she finally finds her voice. This series is also my love letter to Latin music. I want our worldwide audience to know that as much as we all LOVE Reggaeton, Latin music is so much more!” - Ligiah Villalobos, ‘Adelita: Changing Key’ Executive Producer

Adelita: Changing the Key is distributed by iHeartPodcasts. New podcast episodes will be released three times per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Founded by Jonathan Stern, Abominable Pictures is the production company behind popular comedy series including Murderville (Netflix) “Wet Hot American Summer” (Netflix),“Children’s Hospital” (Adult Swim), and “Burning Love” (Hulu).

“Ever since I was an infant, I’ve been a podcast enthusiast,” said Jonathan Stern, founder of Abominable Pictures and Honorable Mention. “But I always wanted to hear more comedies. Fortunately, so does iHeart.”

The first show to launch from the slate is “Brewster High” -- which premiered today, January 10th. This 10-part scripted comedy follows a group of students who suspect the official story about the mysterious disappearance of their beloved Ultimate Frisbee star is a lie. They do some digging, uncovering mysteries that don't quite add up -- a Frisbee gambling ring, a biker gang (well, dad cyclists), a rigged talent show and all sorts of torrid affairs. As our crew gets consumed by their quest for the truth, their personal lives struggle but they gain good material for their college application essays.

The first three episodes of “Brewster High,” executive produced by Stern and Keith Quinn, are available now with new episodes releasing every Tuesday on iHeartRadio and all major podcast platforms. Listen now, HERE.

iHeartPodcasts’ upcoming slate with Abominable Pictures and Honorable Mention also includes:

  • Debunked,” Launching 2023, Unscripted
From former CIA officers John Sipher and Jerry O’Shea, and executive producers Adam Davidson and Jonathan Stern. Two former CIA operatives look at a new conspiracy every week and figure out how to pull it off themselves.
  • Table Read,” Launching 2023, Unscripted
An improv-sketch hybrid from sketch group The Cook County Social Club (Greg Hess, Brendan Jennings, Andy Miara and Mark Raterman), “Table Read” features a group of aspiring screenwriters as they workshop dubious scripts and then try and pitch the “best” of them.
